“I hate them all!” Amelia drops onto the bench on Main Street. “After the one I saw in Maximillian Couture, nothing even compares. I just look like a froofy wedding cake in all those other ones.”

I rub my forehead. “Amelia, I want you to have the wedding of your dreams. But that dress…”

“I know. It’s way out of my price range. It’s half a year of vet school.”

“What about the one with the bow in the back?”

“The one that made me look like meringue?”

“Uh…” I’m second-guessing my suggestion now. She kinda did look like meringue. “Yes, that one.”

Amelia gives me a look.

“Yeah, never mind.” I sit down beside her and look at my watch. “We’re ten minutes from closing time. Do you want to go back to Maximillian just to see that dress one more time? Maybe we can take a picture and try to find something online.”

“Something online that delivers within a week?”

I shrug.

“Yeah,” she says, sighing. “Let’s go look.”

The door jingles and the shop lady lowers her magazine. “Oh! It’s you!”

“Hey,” Amelia says meekly. “I was hoping I could just look at that dress one more time.”

“Of course.”

We approach it slowly, like it might disappear before our eyes if we move too fast. Amelia holds it up. “It’s perfect.”

The shop lady joins us. “I could tell you really loved it.”

“I did.” Amelia swallows hard and I wonder if she’s going to cry. “I still do.”

“I knew you would.” The shop lady strolls, pacing around us with her hands behind her back. “I’ve learned a little something in my time in this shop. Women who love a dress the way you loved that dress always come back to buy it.”

“Those women have a bigger budget than I do.”

“I could see that. Vet school is an investment. But a woman who loves medieval jousting as much as I do deserves a dress that is almost the dress of her dreams…”

Amelia and I look at each other, but I have no idea where the shop lady is going with this.

“I made you something, just in case,” she says and then disappears in the back.

“What’s happening?” Amelia asks.

“I think you’re about to be rewarded for your knowledge of obscure medieval pastimes.”

The shop lady reemerges with a dress in her hands. The dress… except not. The fabric is a slightly different sheen and the embroidery is a different pattern but…

“OH MY GOODNESS I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT!” Amelia screams and jumps up and down, clapping her hands and laughing with a combination of delight and outright mania.

The shop lady smiles. “I made it.”

“You’re amazing!” Tears stream down Amelia’s face.

The shop lady winks. “Anything for a fellow lady of the lance.”
